So we are getting Battle Royale in 3D afterall?

This is just a brief update on a story from way back in May, about the possibility of one of my all-time favorite movies, Battle Royale, being re-released into theaters on 3D. The film, first released back in 2000(God I'm old!!) never made it here to the United States during it's first run. Why? Well, we weren't that far removed from the Columbine tragedy, and Battle Royale's storyline about schoolkids being forced to murder eachother with a varied assortment of weapons probably wasn't going to fly too well. Or so people thought. I actualy don't think it would have mattered, but I understand the hesitation.

Anyway, back in May there was talk that the flick would be re-released on 3D screens in Japan, but little was known about a United States release. Now comes word that Anchor Bay is definitely set to bring the violent classic(at least in my opinion) to our shores. They just recently acquired the rights from Toei, the previous holders. They also secured the rights to Battle Royale II: Requiem. Let's just say I'm not nearly as excited about that.

Even if this does take place, don't expect a wide release pattern or anything. We're still talking about a decade old movie, heavily sub-titled, with a premise that is going to turn most people off. What they should do is make it a twin bill, showing both Battle Royale flicks back-to-back. The 3D isn't going to add anything, since it's not a special effects heavy flick to begin with, but there's a major part of me that has always wished he could've seen these movies in a proper theater setting.

Just for fun, take a look at the trailer for Battle Royale, complete with the overly dramatic musical score that I loved so much.
