A quick update and some possibly troubling news in regards to the upcoming Conan the Barbarian flick coming out next year. The Jason Momoa starring sword and sorcery flick just recently changed it's name from the boring Conan 3D, we assumed to be more closely aligned with the Schwarzenegger movie from the 1980s. Well, that may not be the sole reason.
It was always the case that Conan would be converted to 3D in post-production. Not anyone's preferred method, but that was what director Marcus Nispel and Nu Image had decided upon. Considering all the problems post-conversion 3D has caused other productions, is it possible that the name change was a reflection of the studio deciding against the format entirely? An "insider" tells Moviehole...
“It could be that they have abandoned 3D but last I heard they were going to shoot some more 3D friendly scenes and then hire a freelance firm to convert it in post”.
The extra scenes he may be referring to are coming right after a round of test screenings. That's usually not a good sign, especially when the cast is hustled back to shoot them months after filming has been completed.
The insider states that the test screenings went "Ok", but that people need to realize that this is a new take on the Conan character, and isn't a straight up version of the Robert E. Howard books. Seriously, I don't think people are that fanatical about Conan that they'll be screaming in the streets if something gets tweaked. As long as he's carrying a big ass sword and not a pom-pom I think people will be ok.
