Trailer Time: The Grandmasters, directed by Wong Kar Wai
I know a lot of people were disappointed with Wong Kar Wai's last film, My Blueberry Nights, starring Norah Jones and Jude Law. I rather enjoyed it, mainly because of the supporting cast and the typical Kar Wai heavily moody atmosphere. Rachel Weisz is great in a rather limited role. The director has focused his energies mainly on romantic time pieces like In the Mood for Love and 2046, but now he's taking a turn in a totally different direction with his next flick, The Grandmasters.
The film will follow the story of Yip Man, the legendary Wing Chun master and trainer of a young Bruce Lee. His story has been told in the films Ip Man and Ip Man 2, the latter soon to be released here in the States. To call this a trailer is actually pretty misleading. It's barely a teaser, basically just an announcement of The Grandmaster's arrival. No release date has been set for it at this time, but I'm down for it regardless. Not only am I a big fan of Kar Wai's style, but the story of Yip Man, always exaggerated beyond belief, is a fun one. Tony Leung stars, with Zhang Ziyi making an always appreciated appearance as well. We don't get to see nearly enough from her anymore.
Thanks to Movielicious and the American Film Market for the teaser and cool images!
