John's Top 10 of 2010
Ah the year that was, unemployment, financial woes, war, and other thing of the like that make one yearn for escape from this broken world of ours. So, obviously we went to the movies....and in droves. So that must mean it was a great year for movies right? Well sort of...as with every year you have your set of stinkers but here are the 10 movies that I thought went above and beyond. Needless to say if you haven't seen these check 'em out the first chance you get.
10. The Losers
A group of special ops soldiers are betrayed by their government and a mysterious man named Max. Over the top action, truly funny moments and all the action cliches you can handle make this my top action movie of the year and number ten on my list. What to watch for: Chris Evans side splitting performance of Don't Stop Believing
9. Kick-Ass
The movie that broke the mold as to what we should expect from something based on a comic book. Brash, vulgar, ultra-violent, completely insane, and thoroughly entertaining. I have yet to meet a person who did not like this movie. You don't even have to like comics or comic heros as this is something completely different. What to watch for: Nicolas Cage channeling Adam West and the bad assery that is the 11 year old Hit Girl
8.Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt.1
Perhaps not a film for those who aren't fans of the series, I absolutely loved it. So much in fact that I immediately went out and read the rather large book from which it was based. The story leading up to the final Battle of Hogwarts builds just the right amount of tension to leave you both satisfied and completely on edge begging for July to come sooner.
More following the break...
7. Shutter Island
DiCaprio succeeds in bringing Dennis LeHane's federal Marshall to life. Stuck on an island housing an insane asylum he and his partner, played by Mark Ruffallo must solve the mystery before they become part of it. Dark, gothic, atmospheric and mind bending fans of a good mystery are sure to not be disappointed in this one.
6. Love & Other Drugs
In my feeble little mind this one has Oscar gold written all over its performances. An unconventional love story between two people who want nothing to do with the big L, this movie set the bar for what a romantic comedy could be. Anne Hathaway is brilliant (and very nude for those so interested), and the supporting cast is amazing. This one's a story that should be watched in the company of the one you love.
