I continue to lament the demise of HBO's late great Western series, Deadwood, which really catapulted Ian McShane into the public eye as town Al Swearengen. The only upside is that it's freed McShane up to do more movies, such as last year's 44 Inch Chest and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Now he's signing on to what looks to be yet another big time tentpole franchise, as Heatvision reports he'll be joining Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer.
McShane will be King Brahmwell, who sees his daughter(Eleanor Tomlinson) kidnapped by a giant, sparking the entire story. Jack(Nicholas Hoult) is the hero who goes off to rescue her. Stanley Tucci is the King's treacherous adviser, while Ewan McGregor is the captain of the King's royal guard. Bill Nighy and John Kassir are the double-headed giant leader. The film is set to be a more violent, action-oriented take on the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale, but is probably best connected to the 1962 Jack the Giant Killer movie. Shooting is set to begin in just a few days with a planned 2012 release.
Playing a monarch isn't anything new to McShane, having just played one in the short-lived NBC drama, Kings. I loved that show for the brief time it was on, and McShane was typically great in it.
