These aren't getting any easier. Deciding between my two favorite actresses is an impossible task, so I decided to cheat and pick a movie that has both of them in it. That movie would be Dick, released in 1998 and starring Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams. A truly under appreciated comedy that works whether you're a Richard Nixon/Watergate expert like yours truly, or if you're just in it for a wacky political comedy.
Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams couldn't be more different, despite their classically beautiful looks. Dunst became an early favorite of mine early on in Interview with the Vampire, and then went on to headline a number of films I hold dear: Drop Dead Gorgeous, Bring It On, Crazy/Beautiful, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But she hit a bit of a slump over the last few years, and is only just starting to emerge from it by out performing Ryan Gosling inAll Good Things. I can't wait to see how she handles herself in Lars Von Trier's Melancholia.
I never saw Michelle Williams on Dawson's Creek, so I can't judge her on that. For me she stayed pretty much under the radar even after starring opposite Dunst in Dick. It was in 2001 that she would become a permanent fixture at the top of my list, starring as half of a complicated friendship in Me Without You. Since then her lead roles have been mostly on the indie side, such as Wendy and Lucy or Blue Valentine, but has been equally brilliant in supporting turns in Brokeback Mountain and Shutter Island.
