30 Day Film Challenge Day 15: The Film That Depicts Your Life

Pfft! Isn't it obvious? Action Jackson!

Seriously, it's not easy finding a movie about a dorky, suburban African-American film critic. In fact it's damn impossible, so I had to switch it up a little bit and pick a movie that has a central character I've always related to, and that's Hill Harper's character in Loving Jezebel.

In this refreshing and hip rom-com, Harper plays Theodorous Melville(!!??), a guy cursed not just with a terrible name but an attraction to complicated women and doomed relationships. The reason why I dig him so much is that he's unlike any other African-American character we were seeing on the big screen at that time. Smart, free thinking, a little nerdy but irresistable, and painfully aware of his own shortcomings. Like him, I like to think that I slogged through all those pointless flings in order to help me discover the kind of relationship I really wanted to be in.

Loving Jezebel features a sexy cast as well: Laurel Holloman(The L Word), Nicole Ari Parker(Boogie Nights), Sandrine Holt(Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever), and more round out Hill's list of leading ladies. It's a wonder film and worth picking up for cheap if you can find it.
