Benedict Cumberbatch joins The Hobbit

I've never had a chance to check out the widely acclaimed BBC series, Sherlock, which features The Hobbit's Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson. Maybe I'll catch up with it the same way I caught up with the excellent Robin Hood series. Freeman, who has been going back and forth between shooting the Peter Jackson epic and the second season of Sherlock, recently let slip that when he returns to the Shire he'll be bringing somebody with him: his Sherlock co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch.

Letting the "secret" out of the bag at the BAFTA Awards over the weekend, Freeman immediately regretted the error, but had some fun with it...

Freeman: "I knew I was a big mouth, I didn't know how much of a big mouth, and I've ruined everything. And now I might not have a job to go back to!"

While Cumberbatch is currently earning raves for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the series, he's seen his big screen career take off over the last few years as well. He most recently was seen(by a few people, anyway) in Four Lions, and as Joseph Hooker in the Darwin biopic, Creation. He's got a slew of high profile roles coming up: he'll be seen opposite Rachel Weisz in the political drama, The Whistleblower later this year; and he'll be in the upcoming adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Before that we'll have a chance to see him in Steven Spielberg's War Horse.

As for who he'll play in The Hobbit? Not sure as of yet, but he does have a certain elven look to him. But my guess is that he'll take on the major human role of the film, that of Bard the Bowman.
