Over the weekend, Terence Malick's polarizing film The Tree of Life took home the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Kinda surprising to me, considering the reaction to it, and my own personal feelings towards it which I'll reveal in the coming weeks. If you want to have your brain rattled by extremes, try watching grandiose The Tree of Life back-to-back with the inert Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Still, Fox Searchlight must be kicking themselves with glee to be able to hype the impossible to market film as an award winner.
The distributor has just released the full release schedule for the film, kicking off in a slow six week roll out beginning on May 27th in New York and Los Angeles. Most notably for us here in the Nation's Capital, the film gets here on June 3rd in limited release, expanding to more theaters in the area and nationally before finally hitting wide theatrical release on July 8th. So it looks like everyone is going to have their opportunity to experience The Tree of Life for themselves and draw their own conclusions.
