Columbia Pictures nabs Kathryn Bigelow's Seal Team 6 film

You might have heard this somewhere before, but Osama Bin Laden is dead. That fact kicked off a whirlwind of activity in Hollywood, as studios scrambled to get productions underway chronicling Seal Team 6, the guys who put the global terrorist under the sea for good. But Kathryn Bigelow and her The Hurt Locker scribe Mark Boal were already miles ahead as they'd been tracking the team for months while planning a film based on their hunt for Bin Laden. The film was going under the working title of Kill Bin Laden, and Joel Edgerton(Animal Kingdom) was attached. Well both the name and possibly Edgerton appear to be in the weeds right now, but what they do have is a distributor in Sony's Columbia Pictures.

Columbia will distribute the film, which is already riding a wave of amazing buzz in the light of recent events. Boal went back and reworked the final leg of the script to reflect Bin Laden's demise, and according to recent reports he's nearly done. THR also notes that the now untitled film is set to begin shooting this summer, but there's one big problem. Edgerton just recently signed on to Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, which will also be shooting in Australia at the same time. While his departure isn't official, there hasn't been a lot of talk about his participation in the last couple of weeks. I'd be surprised if he chooses a supporting role in Gatsby over a lead like this, especially considering what The Hurt Locker did for Jeremy Renner's career.

Part of me thinks this is still a little too soon, but there are already like a half dozen Seal Team 6 flicks in the works. Out of all those if I had to pick only one to see it'd be Bigelow and Boal's. Plans are for the film to be ready by late next year, so expect to see it featured prominently during awards season.
