Ed Westwick joins Hailee Steinfeld in new Romeo & Juliet

Time to play a little catch up with Hailee Steinfeld's next big film, the billionth adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The breakout star from True Grit, who had been sorta struggling to capitalize on the success, signed up for it early last month. Since then, Holly Hunter(Thirteen) joined up to play The Nurse, and shooting was set to begin this summer in Italy. I can think of worse places to film a movie.

While there's still no word on who will play the Romeo to her Juliet, we do know who gets to be his chief rival, Tybalt. Variety reports that Ed Westwick, who just recently had a supporting role in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, will join the Carlo Carlie(Fluke) directed flick. Westwick has spent the last few years wallowing in the Gossip Girl muck, but like a large part of that terrible show's cast, he's used it as a springboard into greater things.

I don't know squat about this guy, but if Eastwood cast him then he must have something besides a pretty face going for him. Still, Romeo and Juliet is a tired idea that is in desperate need of a break. Gnomeo and Juliet had some fun with the idea few months ago but does anybody think adding a few new faces is going to make this version unique?
