Sure Shots: Tim Burton; The Mortal Instruments; Keifer Sutherland

* Tim Burton has dropped out of directing Maleficent, Disney's dark revisionist take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. Burton was set to reteam with Alice in Wonderland scribe Linda Woolverton on the film, which also has Angelina Jolie attached for the title role. Disney still intends to move ahead, with regular Harry Potter director David Yates high on their list to take over.

* With Alex Pettyfer losing his teen mojo and jumping in to more adult stuff like Channing Tatum's male stripper flick, Magic Mike, that leaves one of the major adaptations he was primed for ripe to plucked by somebody else. That would be The Mortal Instruments, based on Cassandra Clare's popular series of novels, with Scott Stewart(Legion, Priest) directing and Lily Collins(The Blind Side) set to star. The Wrap reports Jamie Campbell-Bower(Sweeney Todd, Camelot), Ed Speleers(Eragon), and first timer Leebo Freeman are all up for the gig. They'd play Jace, a demon hunter and love interest to Collins' character.

* That 24 flick might not ever get made, but in the meantime Kiefer Sutherland has kept himself busy. He'll be popping up in Lars Von Trier's crazy end of the world film, Melancholia, and now he'll have a chance to add a notch on his bedpost for Kate Bosworth in the romantic comedy, Fairytale of New York. Lee Cleary directs, based on a script by Jeff Murphy. The film follows an Irish stand up comedian who meets an American woman in a New York art gallery. Can Jack Bauer do an Irish accent? I have my doubts.
