Is there any filmmaker for you that everything they make is just pure gold? For me, that guy is Paul Thomas Anderson. Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood...they all count as some of my favorite movies ever, and they're all vastly different in terms of premise and narrative. Any day that a new Anderson film premieres it's like my birthday, Christmas, and "Pizza Friday" in elementary school all rolled into one.
After an inauspicious beginning, Anderson's religiously themed epic formerly titled The Master is up and running. The Weinstein Company is distributing, and the cast has filled out nicely with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix in the two major roles. Even if the plot has been "tweaked" a little, I know Anderson did it for the better. Initially the film soundedlike a take on the origins of Scientology but now is described as being about a guy who creates a belief system in the aftermath of World War II.
A somewhat meager teaser poster has cropped up(seen above) over at Cannes for the film, discovered by Cigarettes and Red Vines(via Slashfilm). As others have noted, there's not a lot to it, and is likely just a way of getting the word out to the money dealing folks at the festival. Check it out below!
Shooting begins next month with a likely release some time in 2012. Can't wait!
