It's been a long time since Miranda July burst onto the scene in 2005 with her surreal romance, Me and You and Everyone We Know. Unlike most people I wasn't immediately in love with it, finding it a bit too proud of itself. It was quirky for the sake of being quirky, so much so that it felt inconsequential. The film catapulted July into "must-see" status, but her follow-up never materialized until now. July writes, directs, and stars in The Future, a film about an LA couple in their mid-30s who adopt an ailing cat. Upon doing so they realize that their lives have now been changed by the weight of responsibility, caring for the future of another living creature. The two become consumed with their own futures as well, and judging by the look of the trailer become consumed with doing all the things they wanted to do before it's too late.
Weirdly, it's the cat(named Paw Paw) who narrates. Starring alongside July is Hamish Linklater(Groove). Roadside Attractions will release the film on July 29th. I think this one has a much better chance of connecting with me than July's previous work, since it appears to have a much tighter focus on two characters. Check out the trailer below, followed by the official plot synopsis...
THE FUTURE tells the story of a thirty-something couple who, on deciding to adopt a stray cat, change their perspective on life, literally altering the course of time and testing their faith in each other and themselves.
