* I genuinely like George Tillman Jr. as a filmmaker, even though the vast majority of his most prominent work is stuff I'd never watch twice(Soul Food, Men of Honor,Notorious). I did enjoy his tough as nails actioner, Faster, last year. Well now he's back behind the camera, and he's going back to the reality based stuff that is his strength. He'll take on a biopic of journeyman boxer, Peter Buckley, considered by many to be the worst fighter ever. Buckley ended his career with a staggering 32W-256L record.
* Remember Ted Turner's Eco-superhero Captain Planet? If not then I bet you remember the irritating ring ceremony his Planeteers went through to summon his lame ass. Basically they combined their elemental rings(plus heart, which I never understood) until the nerdy blue loser sprung from the earth. Cartoon Network is hoping there's still some fond memories left for him, because they've teamed up with producers Don Murphy(Transformers:Dark of the Moon) and his wife Susan Montford(Real Steel) to put together a live-action film. The floodgates are open, kids. Even the worst superhero of all time gets a flick. Here's hoping they don't have the "heart" to go through with it.
* I've been less than thrilled with Robert Redford's whiny political films of late. Dude, I'm with ya on your viewpoint, but when I get a whiff of it during a movie about the assassination of Abe Lincoln, you need to dial it back. Redford's latest directing gig sounds promising. He'll helm and star in The Company You Keep, as a former member of terrorist faction the Weather Underground, who's been in hiding from the FBI for 30 years. He's forced to go on the run when he's exposed by an ambitious reporter. Shia Labeouf, back to actually acting again, will play the reporter.
