Lionsgate is pulling out all the stops in their marketing campaign for The Hunger Games. Not surprising, with the two biggest franchises (Harry Potter, Twilight) either gone or on their last legs. I have some doubts whether Suzanne Collins' books will have the same level of appeal on the big screen as they do on the printed page, mainly due to the older characters and level of violence, but regardless I'll be first in line when they open next year on March 23rd. Oh, and speaking of that marketing campaign? Lionsgate has released a scorching motion poster for the film, featuring Katniss Everdeen's blazing mockingjay pin. It's a symbol that's going to mean a lot of different things to a lot of people in story. Check it out, courtesy of Yahoo...
For those unaware, The Hunger Games takes place in a future version of America known as Panem. Panem is under the thumb of a central government placed in The Capitol. There are 12 separate districts, each specializing in a different trade. For the most part, each distrct is in poverty or close to it. Each year, the districts are forced to send two children, a boy and a girl, to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal competition where they must kill each other off until only one remains. This is done as a punishment for a rebellion which took place decades prior.
The Hunger Games is the first of Suzanne Collins' trilogy. Gary Ross(Seabiscuit) is directing, based on a script by Billy Ray(Shattered Glass) and Collins. Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Lenny Kravitz, and at least three dozen more folks are set to star.
