A lot of the excitement I had for Snitch fell off when Carl Franklin(Out of Time, Devil in a Blue Dress) was replaced as director by Ric Roman Waugh(Felon). Nothing against Waugh, it's just Franklin has a grittier style that would've served the material well. It still looks like a hell of a potential project, with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson already locked in to star, and now THR reports Susan Sarandon is jumping aboard.
The long in development film centers on a suburban dad(Johnson) who sees his son sentenced to 30 years in prison under a heavy handed mandatory minimum drug law. To help reduce his son's sentence, he decides to go under cover and get some dirt on a major drug lord. Justin Haythe(The Lone Ranger) wrote the early version of the script, with Waugh doing some rewrites, which apparently included retooling one of the major characters for Sarandon. She'll play an ambitious U.S. attorney who thinks one major drug bust will advance her political career.
Sounds a little far out, right? Believe it or not, Snitch is based on a true story, which became the basis for a documentary on Frontline. Straight up. It's still likely going to be heavily fictionalized(think Domino or Machine Gun Preacher), but it's still pretty cool.
No word on when shooting may kick off. Sarandon is currently shooting Cloud Atlas, her second film with The Wachowskis(Speed Racer). Johnson is in the midst of G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation.
