James Cameron reveals how Sigourney Weaver will return in Avatar 2

You don't hear a lot of folks curious about the future of Sam Worthington's character in the next couple of Avatar movies. What was his name again? Eh, who cares. Considering the movie made nearly $3B worldwide I'm sure somebody will remind me. No, people have mostly been wondering about Sigourney Weaver's character, Dr. Grace Augustine. Last month, Weaver confirmed to everyone that Grace would return for James Cameron's sequels, which was a little odd since(and I don't think I'm spoiling anything) she had quite the noble death at the end....

Weaver: “Jim says no one ever dies in science fiction. He’s told me the stories for the next two movies and I have to say that they’re absolutely wonderful and there’s a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them.”

While some(including myself) have speculated her spirit would become part of the forest or other such sci-fi mumbo jumo, James Cameron recently spoke to Vulture a little about his plan for Weaver and how she's able to come back...

Cameron: "But have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling? A lot happens on that planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her. She’s there for fifteen years ahead of time. I don’t know, but I wouldn’t jump to conclusions. And I’ve already said way too much about Avatar 2 and 3 here and there, but people piece it together like those voice cameos and tell the whole story!"

Cameron was in town being honored at the  Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards, which was presented to him by Weaver. After having worked together on two of the most popular sci-fi movies ever in Aliens and Avatar, the two are obviously close. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Avatar sequel, due out in December of 2014, turned out to be much more of a prequel than people think, with Weaver's character really taking the forefront. I guess we'll find out then, and after that Avatar 3 is expected to hit at the tail end of 2015.
