Johnny Depp to produce and maybe star in Dr. Seuss biopic

Johnny Depp has a thing about playing world renowned writers. Whether they be Hunter S. Thompson, John Wilmot, or in my personal favorite Depp film, Finding Neverland where he played J.M. Barrie. But he may be about to add probably the most beloved writer in American history, Dr. Seuss.

Illumination Entertainment, currently hard at work on an animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, is teaming up with Depp's production company for a biopic on the author's life. Depp isn't confirmed to star or anything, but doesn't this seem like something he'd jump through hoops for? Illumination is the company behind recent animated hits as Despicable Me and Hop, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are similar elements blended into the live-action story.

There aren't any scandals in Seuss' life that come close to mirroring those of the other writers Depp has portrayed, so it'll be interesting to see what angle they take. Seuss(real name Theodor Geisel) ran into some problems with folks claiming his stories were too political, but in general his story is pretty tame, but obviously not boring.

No word on when this will kick off, but this appears to be very early in development. [THR]
