Mr. Popper's Penguins writers hired for Dumb and Dumber sequel; Carrey and Daniels expected to return

Remember back in June when Jim Carrey told us plans for in the works for him to revisit a couple of his most popular films, Bruce Almighty and Dumb and Dumber? Well there's been no movement on the former to the best of my knowledge but something is definitely afoot with the latter, as Deadline reports the Farrelly Brothers are pushing ahead with the long awaited sequel to the (overrated) 1994 comedy, bringing in Mr. Popper's Penguins writers Sean Anders and John Morris to pen the script.

While nothing appears to be set in stone, Carrey is expected to reprise his role as good natured moron Lloyd Christmas. Jeff Daniels is being approached as well to return as his fellow mental midget, Harry Dunne.Carrey tends to get flaky about upcoming projects, but with his previous statements it at least appears he's interested.  Right now the only thing concrete on his schedule is co-starring with Steve Carell in Burt Wonderstone.

The Farrelly Brothers next have The Three Stooges set to release in April. Presumably Dumb and Dumber would be the next project they'll tackle. As much as I loathe the idea of Mr. Popper's Penguins, it cleared something like $180M worldwide. And clearly Anders and Morris, who made the solid teen comedy Sex Drive, had a good working relationship with Carrey. The only question I have is how can you make the story of two mentally challenged fifty year olds anything less than a tragedy? At least it may force people to forget the awful sequel.
