Octavia Spencer joins Diablo Cody's directorial debut, Lamb of God

What better way to find success than with the help of your friends? Octavia Spencer has been a solid comedic and dramatic actress for years, gaining some level of acclaim for her role in the series Ugly Betty. But alongside her longtime friend, director Tate Taylor, that Spencer became a household name as the feisty Minnie in this summer's hit comedy, The Help. Could a Best Supporting Actress award be in her future? Only time will tell, but after she's done campaigning for the film she'll be jumping into another anticipated directorial debut, joining Diablo Cody's religious comedy, Lamb of God.

Russell Brand and Julianne Hough will star in the story of devout Christian girl who survives an airplane crash but doesn't escape totally unscathed. Her faith shattered, she heads to Las Vegas to live a life of sin, and makes friends who help set her on back on the right course. Brand will play a bartender named William, while Spencer is a craps dealer named Loray.

Of course Cody will be bringing her unique writing voice to the film as well, and this one's already looking like one to keep an eye on. Filming doesn't kick off until next fall, so we've got awhile to wait. By the time Lamb of God hits, Cody may be able to tout the presence of an Oscar winner.

You can still find The Help in theaters right now. You can check out my recent interview with Spencer and Tate Taylor right here. [Variety]
