Sure Shots: Gangster Squad; Melissa McCarthy; The Lords of Salem
* Remember the annoying white guy from both of the Barbershop movies? No? Well I don't blame you, but he was actually played by Troy Garity, son of Jane Fonda. After a couple of head turning performances in Bandits and Danny Boyle's awesome sci-fi flick, Sunshine, Garity kinda fell out of view. Well now he's back, and for a big screen comeback he couldn't have chosen a better film. He's joined the cast of Gangster Squad, Ruben Fleischer's film following a 1940s LAPD unit designed to stop the influx of east coast mobsters into the west side. Garity will play a one-eyed hitman to gang leader Mickey Cohen(Sean Penn). Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Emma Stone, Michael Pena, Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi, and Robert Patrick star. Gangster Squad will open on October 19th 2012. [Variety]
* Back in September, Melissa McCarthy seemed especially excited her script for a road trip comedy titled Tammy. The story focuses on a woman who sees her life crumbling down around her, and needing to get out of town, she wants to borrow her hard drinking grandmother's car. The only catch is she wants to tag along, leading to a wild road trip of wacky shenanigans and self discovery. New Line, who have struck gold with their R-rated comedies already this year(Horrible Bosses, Hall Pass), have picked up McCarthy's script. No word on when this may kick into high gear, but McCarthy's busy. She'll appear in Judd Apatow's Knocked Up spinoff, has a project with her Bridesmaids director Paul Feig, and will star opposite Jason Bateman in the comedy ID Theft.
* Scream queen Barbara Crampton(Re-Animator) is the latest to join the cast of The Lords of Salem, Rob Zombie's upcoming horror about an ancient coven of witches unleashed in the modern world. She joins Sherri Moon Zombie, Meg Foster, Bruce Dern, Billy Drago, and many other horror vets. The film is currently shooting for a release some time in 2012.
