As much fun as it might be to pan the crap out of 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth, the fact is it cleared over $240M and helped usher in the latest wave of 3D movies. That film starred Brendan Fraser, who along with his nephew find themselves in a lost world deep beneath the earth's surface. Well Fraser was apparently too busy for the sequel, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, but I consider that to be addition by subtraction. Josh Hutcherson is back reprising his role as Sean Anderson, only now instead of Fraser it's going to be Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the resident hunky adult, playing Sean's new stepfather.
A trailer for the film has been released, and it looks like fairly tame family adventure stuff. Michael Caine
With the increased profiles of Johnson and Hutcherson, Journey 2 may wind up doing better than the original. We'll find out when the film hits on February 10th 2012
