Nicole Beharie joins the Jackie Robinson biopic, '42'

The role of Marianne, the woman who thinks she's found something special with Michael Fassbender's character in Shame, only to discover he's more screwed up than she thought, could have been an easily forgettable one. Certainly it had the possibility of being overshadowed by Fassbender's powerful performance, or of that by Carey Mulligan. But it wasn't. In fact, it turned out to be one of the most most important and effective of the entire film, and Nicole Beharie is the reason why.

After making a stunning debut a few years ago in the real life drama, American Violet, Beharie is now finally starting to get the attention she deserves. Deadline reports she'll be playing Rachel Isum, the wife of groundbreaking athlete Jackie Robinson in 42, the upcoming biopic from writer/director Brian Helgeland. That means she'll be sharing the bulk of her scenes with newcomer Chadwick Boseman, following the Hall of Famer's career as the first African-American to play in the Major Leagues.

They'll be joined by Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers exec, Branch Rickey, who made the fateful decision to call Robinson up, changing the face of sports forever. Christopher Meloni(Law & Order: SVU) is set to play Dodgers manager, Leo Durocher.
