'The Dark Knight Rises' to feature more than an hour of IMAX footage

There has been no greater champion of the IMAX format than Christopher Nolan, who after filming 2008's The Dark Knight said he wished he could have shot the entire thing using it. He did more than any other director at the time, shooting four of the film's biggest scenes in IMAX, including the jaw dropping car chase between Batman and the Joker. But if you thought that was a lot, Nolan is pushing the limits even further with The Dark Knight Rises.

The Wall Street Journal recently revealed that Nolan has shot over an hour of IMAX footage for the final leg of his Batman trilogy, making it the most in Hollywood history by far. It makes sense, as the format is practically a necessity for any film that hopes to be considered one of the year's biggest. The Hunger Games performed so well that it's returning to IMAX theaters for a one week run starting this coming Friday, and Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol designed a number of amazing scenes specific for it. Despite the increased costs of using the 65mm cameras for filming, I think Nolan is slowly creeping his way to trying to do an entire movie using the format, and this is a big first step in that direction.

Another reason to get amped up for The Dark Knight Rises when it opens on July 20th!
