New photos from Lee Daniels' 'The Paperboy', with Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, and Matthew McConaughey

The most intriguing aspect of The Paperboy initially had nothing to do with its director, Lee Daniels. It was Pedro Almodovar, who at the time of Daniels taking over had been developing the film for years before handing over the reins. At the time, the film had Tobey Maguire attached as one of the stars, but things have changed and the cast has certainly grown into one of the most star-studded of the year. With the film recently confirmed to compete at Cannes, a handful of new photos have been released featuring stars Zac Efron, a trashy Nicole Kidman, and Matthew McConaughey.

Based on the crime novel by Pete Dexter, the story takes place in the 1960s where newspaper men ruled the day and journalists were the detectives of their time. McConaughey plays a respected Florida journalist who, along with his college dropout brother, played by Efron, get caught up in an investigation surrounding a Death Row inmate's possible wrongful conviction. John Cusack plays the inmate, with Nicole Kidman as his sexy fiance who will do anything to set him free. David Oyelowo and Scott Glenn co-star.

Daniels has had a spotty record as far as I'm concerned as a director. Shadowboxer is terrible, and Precious was a film hampered by stagnant direction but bolstered by some fantastic performances. Almodovar would have been the idea choice for this film, but as producer Avi Lerner said last year, he's still very much involved with the production. That's good enough for me.
