A potentially foreboding new trailer for 'The Amazing Spider-Man'

Gwen Stacy was without a doubt Peter Parker's first real love, and to some the gal he should have ended up with over Mary Jane Watson. Their relationship, for all the crap that's been heaped upon it by recent writers of the Spider-Man comic, will always be marked by the way Stacy died, when Spidey attempted to save her from falling with a web, with the whiplash cracking her neck. It's one of the most memorable moments in comic book history, and you don't recreate it in any way without full awareness of that.

So when the latest Australian trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man has the hero tossing Stacy out of a window, then snatching her back with a blast of web fluid, it's done for a reason. Maybe Marc Webb(500 Days of Summer) is teasing us for the future? Or he's deliberately playing with us nerds and our expectations by using it as a gag. There's certainly no reason to think that Gwen Stacy will suffer the same fate as her comic book counterpart. Well, at least not until we see the first appearance of Mary Jane, if that ever even happens.  The rest of the trailer is familiar stuff, solid yet a tad underwhelming. This film seemed to have more traction when the trailers were a mix of dark and light-hearted touches, unlike the most recent ones which have tried hard to position it as a popcorn blockbuster.

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Denis Leary, Rhys Ifans, Sally Field, Martin Sheen, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Chris Zylka, and Irrfhan Khan. Look for it to swing into theaters on July 3rd....
