Gza won't be in the Ol' Dirty Bastard biopic, 'Dirty White Boy'

Well this is certainly disappointing news. Over the weekend I was drawn to a comment from Michael K. Williams(The Wire) about the upcoming biopic, Dirty White Boy, in which he'll be playing the late rapper, Ol' Dirty Bastard. Williams said that producers had "no desire to cast any actors as the Wu-Tang Clan', which led many to speculate that it meant the legendary hip hop crew would be playing themselves. It sounded a little watery to me for a number of reasons, and that certainly appears to be the case.

A rep for Gza(aka Gary Grice) wrote to Pitchfork and informed them that the master rapper/producer has no intentions of being in the film....

“I will tell you 100% he is not appearing in the ODB/Jarred Weisfeld movie. I can’t speak for the rest of the group, but definitely not true about GZA."

That's pretty unequivocal(oxymoron, I know), and leads me back to a question I asked a couple of days ago: Is the Wu-Tang Clan supporting this movie? Gza, who has been busy the last few months wrapping up his latest album(by doing research at MIT!) while also touring the university lecture circuit, began his rap career alongside his cousins, Ol' Dirty Bastard and Rza. So he'd seem to be the surest one to have aboard, which again leads me to wonder who else may not be appearing. Gza has always been my favorite member of the group(Liquid Swords is still a monster!!), so without him my interest takes a nosedive.

The chances of getting the entire Wu-Tang Clan together was always going to be slim, so this isn't really much of a surprise. I'm not totally convinced the film will even happen, despite having Williams ready to go, and Joaquin Baca-Asay making his directorial debut.
