James Cameron will film three 'Avatar' sequels at the same time

Back in May we received a couple of nuggets of good news regarding James Cameron's upcoming Avatar sequels. First, that he was setting aside everything else that could potentially sidetrack him, and focusing solely on Avatar's blue-skinned eco-friendly denizens from now on. Also, we got our first hint at the possibility of this not just being a trilogy, but stretching beyond that into a fourth film. Sigourney Weaver, who we know will be coming back as Dr. Grace Augustine, confirmed to Showbiz 411 that not only will there be an Avatar 4, but that Cameron is shooting all three sequels at the same time.

When “Political Animals” finishes shooting, see if you can follow Weaver’s schedule: she goes right into a new Christopher Durang play for a short run at Lincoln Center. Then she films “Avatar” 2, 3, and 4 with James Cameron. That’s right: they’re making three sequels to the blue 3D phenom all at the same time. Weaver says she has no idea how long it will take, or how it’s going to work.

Political Animals is Weaver's new USA Network series in which she plays a former 1st Lady now Secretary of State. Sound familiar? Yeah, it's got a touch of Clinton in it, and it actually looks pretty good with a cast that include Ciaran Hinds, Carla Gugino, and Ellen Burstyn. If the show gets picked up for another run, Weaver says it'll have to wait until her work on Avatar is completed, which could be awhile.

Last we heard, it sounded as if Cameron's planned release around Christmas 2014 was going to get pushed back, but assuming it doesn't we could potentially be looking at Avatar films for three straight years up until 2016.
