What do you get if you combine the stylized, film noir vibe of Sin City with a martial arts action flick? The Girl from the Naked Eye might be the best example. Written by and starring kick boxing superstar, Jason Yee, the pulpy crime story has been kicking around since last year's festival circuit with pretty good reviews. With the limited release set for June 15th, now is a good time to revisit the trailer, which looks like solid kung fu action presented in a way we've rarely had the opportunity to see.
Yee plays Jake, a hard-nosed detective with a soft spot for the ladies. Especially the bad girls, in particular a sweet, midwest gal turned high class prostitute named Sandy(Samantha Streets) who works out of the Naked Eye strip club. When she's murdered, Jake cuts a bloody swath through everyone and everything standing in the way of his finding out her killer. The trailer is fast paced and gritty, but looks closer to The Spirit than a Philip Marlowe gumshoe flick.
We only get a small taste of Yee's butt kicking abilities, as the emphasis here is on his dogged determination to solve the mystery. Also missing is porn star Sasha Grey(The Girlfriend Experience), playing a femme fatale named Lena. Dominique Swain(Girl), Ron Yuan(Fast & Furious), and Gary Stretch(Alexander) co-star. The film is directed by David Ren, who last helmed the little seen Hayden Panettiere comedy, Shanghai Kiss. Check out the trailer for The Girl from the Naked Eye below....
