Naomi Watts can do no wrong in my book. Nor can Jessica Chastain, really, but Watts is just better suited to certain roles. When we learned she'd be taking on the role of Princess Diana in the film, Caught in Flight, it was an obvious choice, and one I'm surprised wasn't made right from the beginning. Now as production is underway, we're getting our first look at her playing the iconic royal, and the results are extraordinary.
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel(Downfall), the film tells the story of Diana's affair with renowned heart surgeon, Dr. Hasnat Khan. Naveen Andrews(Lost) will play Khan, who was regarded by many to have been the love of Diana's life. They were together from 1995 until briefly before her death, when she hooked up with Dodi Fayed.
Obviously, she's got the look down pat, and even Diana's smirk. This is going to be a controversial film no matter what, but there are questions about how much of her later life is going to be revealed. Will the other royals be in the equation? Probably to some extent we expect to see a portrayal of ol' Prince Charles. And what about the rumors Diana only dated Fayed to get under Khan's skin? Certainly, that sort of manipulation wouldn't make her look all that great. There's no release date or an American distributor yet, but hopefully we'll see the film some time in 2013, probably in time for awards season. [Kinopoisk]
