James Cameron confirms 'Avatar 4' will be a prequel

For a bunch of movies we may not see for years yet, we're hearing an awful lot about James Cameron's Avatar sequels. The director had mentioned the possibility of three follow-ups to his highest grossing movie of all-time, with early reports that he would shoot all three back-to-back. Earlier this week, producer Jon Landau threw cold water on those statements, stating that Cameron would only shoot the next two movies at the same time, leading to some speculation that Avatar 4 was off the table completely. Well, that isn't the case, and Cameron clearly has an idea for what the story will entail.

Speaking with MTV, Cameron revealed that Avatar 4 will take us back to the beginnings of the mistrust between the Na'vi and the humans....

Cameron: "I haven't really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na'vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world. "

He then goes on to state that Avatar 4 may not be the end of the story, but just the end of a single arc....

Cameron: "Because when we drop in, even in the first film in 'Avatar 1,' as it will be known in the future, we're dropping into a process that's 35 years in to a whole colonization. That will complete an arc and if that leads into more, we'll start, not imitating 'Star Wars,' but it's a logical thing to do because we'll have completed the thematic arc by the end of three. The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films. It's a plan."

The next two movies are still having their scripts worked out, and Cameron says he's writing them together as "one big thing". The question still remains as to when we might see Avatar 2, as 20th Century Fox initially was targeting December 2014. Landau recently hinted at the possibility of it being years down the line.
