Last weekend, a rumor that Marvel's Dr. Strange may be appearing in Thor: The Dark World sent Internet fanboys into a total lather. But there was another rumor that had emerged just a few days earlier, totally unconnected, that had Viggo Mortensen being courted to join Marvel's second phase of superhero flicks. Certain sites, I'm guessing so they can take credit for it down the line if it comes true, jumped to the conclusion that this meant Mortensen was trying out for Dr. Strange. This despite there being zero evidence, and...oh, maybe a few thousand other characters he could play instead.
Well, if Mortensen isn't up for the Dr. Strange role, Marvel isn't doing a very good job of denying it. Marvel exec Victoria Alonso hit up the Omelete website and denied the Mortensen as Dr. Strange rumors, but I think she went a bit overboard in doing so....
Alonso: “We would love to work with Viggo Mortensen. I’ve been trying that for years. But I don’t know if Viggo is even acting anymore. I thought he wasn’t acting anymore. It would be great to work with him in the future, but we don’t have him signed, no.”
Um, what? So you've been trying to work with Mortensen for years but you think the guy is retired? Excuse me, but that's total bullshit, lady. I guess a little movie like On the Road doesn't exist? Or A Dangerous Method? Or this? What the heck are you talking about?? Her ridiculous denial actually had the opposite effect for me, and now I'm inclined to think something is going on.
Alonso did have something good to say, though, and it's in regards to Edgar Wright's Ant-Man film. At Comic-Con we were treated to the test reel footage that Wright had shot in June, and it was arguably the biggest hit of the entire panel. It was about a minute long, and showed a hyper-kinetic action scene of Ant-Man(just a stunt guy in the suit) using his size shifting powers to take down a squad of armed goons. The fan response was phenomenal, and Alonso says Marvel may make it available for everyone else to see....
Alonso: “What we showed at Comic-Con was a work in progress. We’re working on finishing it, and I think you might see it. Not sure where, but we always listen to the fans. And if the fans demand it we make sure they get it. I don’t know if we are going to post it online, but I don’t have [any reason] to believe we may not.”
Wright will pick up filming on Ant-Man after he completes The World's End with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
