Rumor: Dr. Strange to appear in 'Thor: The Dark World'?

We've talked about it a few times here on the site that if you look really closely at the throne room scene in Thor, you'll get a lot of nifty little Marvel Easter Eggs. In there you'll find Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet, which will definitely be playing a major role in the coming flicks. And also in there you'll see the Eye of Agamotto, the magical amulet belonging to Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Strange. But does that necessarily mean we'll be seeing the good Doctor in Thor: The Dark World when it opens next year? Well, a new rumor that's been floating around indicates the answer is "Yes".

Now this should all be taken with the usual helping of salt, but a Twitter account belonging to a Marvel sleuth named Roger Wardell has caught everyone's attention this weekend. Over the last few months he's been spilling the beans on a number of Marvel secrets, and he's mostly been dead on point. For instance, he knew that Anthony Mackie was going to be Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier before the news became official. Amongst an avalanche of tidbits that all make some very interesting reading, he also dropped this nugget about a certain master of the mystic arts...

"Inside News: There's something "Strange" about Thor: The Dark World"

Another buzz-worthy tweet, that may or may not be connected said this....

"Inside News: Marvel is negotiations with Viggo Mortensen for an unspecified role in one of their Phase 2 films"

Some are already speculating Mortensen could be Marvel's top pick to play Dr. Strange, but that's not for certain and it seems like a strange fit for the actor. He's mostly stayed away from blockbusters since the last Lord of the Rings flick, and has turned down some pretty high profile offers already. Remember when it was supposed to be him and not Chris Hemsworth in Snow White and the Huntsman? Mortensen could just as well be in line for a totally different role altogether. One of Wardell's other rumors states that the alien Adam Warlock and his evil father Magus will be in Guardians of the Galaxy. Who's to say Mortensen wouldn't be perfect for one of those roles, instead? I just don't see him as Dr. Strange. I do, however, see Joel Edgerton(Warrior), who ThePlaylist says they've heard a rumor about. Patrick Dempsey's name was floated out there a couple of years ago, but hopefully smarter heads have prevailed.

So what do we know about Dr. Strange at this point? We know Marvel Prez Kevin Feige has talked it up quite a bit, just as much as he did Guardians of the Galaxy before it was announced. We know Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer turned in a script last year, but there's still no talk of a director. Right now we seem to be much further from anything official in regards to Dr. Strange than we are close.

Keep all this under your hat for now, and when/if something legit drops you know we'll be there to tell you about it. Chances are we'll hear something soon since Thor: The Dark World opens next year on November 8th 2013.
