There was awhile there in the lead up to last year's $700M hit, Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol, where it looked like it may be the final mission for IMF agent Ethan Hunt and star Tom Cruise. Jeremy Renner was the new hot thing in Hollywood, and his addition to the cast seemed like an obvious move to phase Cruise out and transition to a younger and more physical presence. But Cruise proved even at his age(he's 50 now) that he's still one of the top action stars today.
Apparently it's also reinvigorated his love of the franchise, assuming it ever truly left. While speaking to Total Film, Cruise provided an update on Mission: Impossible 5, and seems content on never leaving the series as long as he's physically capable of keeping up....
Cruise: “We’re already working on different images. Talking conceptually. I love travelling around promoting different movies because I’m always looking at different places, and I always walk around to see the city. I look at architecture, subways… coming up with different sequences.”
“It’s been pretty exciting. I’ll make a bunch of those. I’ll make as many as people want to see... because they’re very challenging, and so much fun to make.”
Cruise is piling up more potential tentpoles and franchises now than at any point in his career, with Jack Reacher opening next month, a handful of science fiction films over the next two years, and the newly rebooted Van Helsing.
