If you want a pretty good idea of what's in store if you decide to wade into the murky, badly accented waters of Lee Daniels' The Paperboy, then look no further than this clip. The film is set in 1969 Florida and stars Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey as two brothers investigating the possible wrongful conviction of a Death Row inmate(John Cusack), while also chauffeuring around the prisoner's dirtied up girlfriend played by Nicole Kidman.
The newly released footage includes an absolutely stagnant conversation between Efron and Kidman, as they sorta flirt, sorta not while sitting in the prison parking garage. The clip is only about three minutes long but because of the wobbly accents and cadence that makes it sound as if everyone snorted glue before cameras rolled, it feels like six minutes. Macy Gray's narration plods along the entire time, filling blanks that don't need to be filled, and basically this whole thing is a disaster.
The Paperboy was roundly trashed after Cannes earlier this year, and it's going to get another more thorough bashing when it opens here on October 5th....
