'American Reunion' duo to produce and maybe direct sex comedy 'Cherries'
Sex and stoner comedies have been the stock 'n trade of duo Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz since the very beginning. The pair first broke out with their script for the classic stoner comedy Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, and have helped steer that franchise ever since. Earlier this year they scored their biggest international hit, ironically with American Reunion, a film you'd expect to do far better here, but earned the vast majority of its $230M box office overseas. Now the duo are prepping their next flick, and they aren't venturing too far out of their comfort zone.
Variety reports that the duo are set to produce and possibly direct Cherries, a sex comedy based on a spec script from Jim and Brian Kehoe. The hard R-rated film follows three naive dads who set out to stop their daughters from making good on a pact to lose their virginity on prom night. Ugghh...am I the only one who sees Eugene Levy as one of the dads already?
Good Universe picked up the rights to the script, and there's apparently some hopes of building this into a franchise, which Schlossberg and Hurwitz are obviously pretty familiar with. But what would a sequel entail? Do the dads follow their kids to college? Then through marriage? Oh I know, Cherries: Spring Break. That sounds about right.
