There's been so much going on lately that it's easy to forget everything that James Cameron has been doing with his planned Avatar sequels. We've seen a lot of movement over the last few months, with the plan now to film two sequels back-to-back, and Cameron talking up the possibility of a fourth film that would be a prequel. While we're still not quite sure on a release date, we now have an idea of when production will begin on Avatars 2 and 3.
While talking with The West Australian, Cameron revealed that he wants to get all of the scripting done by next February, with hopes of production beginning by late 2013....
Cameron: "I want to get these scripts nailed down, I don't want to be writing the movie in post production. We kind of did that on the first picture, I ended up cutting out a lot of scenes and so on and I don't want to do that again."
That would seem to put a release probably some time in 2015, which would be incredible considering The Avengers 2 and Justice League are already set for that year. Whenever filming does begin, Cameron is certainly aiming to shoot it in 48fps, much like Peter Jackson has done with The Hobbit. While attending last night's world premiere in New Zealand, Cameron talked up the technology, hoping it will be the evolutionary leap for high-def that Avatar was for 3D....
Cameron: "If there is acceptance of 48, then that will pave the way for 'Avatar' [sequels] to take advantage of it. We charged out ahead on 3D with 'Avatar,' now Peter's doing it with 'The Hobbit.' It takes that kind of bold move to make change."
