The prior works of South Korean director Park Chan-Wook are extremely popular right now. Not only is his classic Oldboy being remade by Spike Lee, but we've known for a couple of years that plans were underway to remake Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, the final chapter in the director's "Vengeance Trilogy". We haven't heard anything about since, but it appears things are finally ready to take a big step forward.
Charlize Theron had been developing the film initially, with Danny Boyle at one time rumored for the directing gig. Well, Boyle was never signed but Theron has managed to get William Monahan(The Departed) to pen the script. She'll take the lead and also partner with Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures to produce the film, which follows a woman who for mysterious reasons completes a prison term for a crime she didn't commit, then gets out and seeks to punish the real killer and avenge the dead. It's probably my least favorite of the entire trilogy, but it's still a wonderful film. Very violent, beautifully shot, and should fit with Monahan's style perfectly. In fact, he's extremely excited about the deal....Monahan: “This will be very American – and very unexpected. Park is a genius; it’s the Everest of adaptations and I've got blood in my teeth to do it.”
