Honestly, I never thought Black Rock was going to be released. Probably not the sort of endorsement one would expect to find on the film's poster, but it's true. It was the very first film I saw at Sundance way back in January, and while it came with a ton of promise thanks to indie stalwarts (and married couple) Katie Aselton(The League) and Mark Duplass(Humpday) taking on the survival horror genre, it never quite lived up to expectations.
Aselton directs and stars alongside Lake Bell(A Good Old Fashioned Orgy) and Kate Bosworth(Straw Dogs), playing three best friends who go on a camping trip to resolve some long-standing grievances. They run into a trio of soldiers who seem nice at first and even join them in a little nighttime fun, but when a sexual encounter turns violent, the women are forced to flee in order to survive.
Duplass has always been one heck of a writer, and his script is solid when capturing bond of three friends who know one another a little too well. But not much else about the film is all that novel, and it becomes a fairly standard-issue thriller after awhile. The trailer doesn't really sell much of the suspense, either, focusing a little too much on the relationship. Black Rock is set to open on May 17th 2013.
