Colin Trevorrow to rewrite and maybe direct Disney's 'Flight of the Navigator' remake

Well, Colin Trevorrow certainly wasn't lying, was he? With all of the evidence pointing towards the director tackling Disney's next Star Wars film, he made it clear on two separate occasions that it wasn't going to be him. So that left a big juicy mystery film with a deep mythology and fans who love it enough to possibly get upset. Turns out it will be for Disney, but probably not what anybody would have expected.

Variety reports that Trevorrow and his Safety Not Guaranteed writer Derek Connolly have been hired to rewrite a remake of Flight of the Navigator. The 1986 film is definitely one that is beloved by many of a certain age(like yours truly), and followed a 12-year old boy who is knocked unconscious, and when he wakes seemingly a few moments later, he discovers that it's many years in the future, although he hasn't aged a day. He soon discovers that an alien spacecraft(voiced by Paul Reubens) had abducted him, and now he must join an extraterrestrial in hopes of getting back to the correct time.

The remake is being developed as a potential directing gig for Trevorrow, who is apparently a lifelong fan. Disney has been working on this since 2009, when Brad Copeland was hired to pen a script. Am I pissed this remake is happening? Not at all. It was a great movie when I was nine, but it's not so high on my list as to be untouchable. Knowing that Trevorrow is such a fan makes me feel a lot better that he'll treat it with the respect it's due.
