1st trailer for Laurent Cantet's 'Foxfire' adaptation

I fell in love with Joyice Carol Oates' feminist novel, Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang, back when I was a teenager. And no, it had nothing to do with me secretly being a 16-year old girl or anything, but the themes of friendship, loyalty, and battling against oppression were universal and appealed to me greatly. Then the 1996 film came out and, while it was very different from the book, I learned to like it even more thanks to what I think was Angelina Jolie's first game-changing performance. She was absolutely magnetic.

A new version of Foxfire is on the way from director Laurent Cantet, who took home the Palm D'or for The Class back in 2008. His film maintains the 1950s setting, and stars a cast of unknowns in depicting a group of girls who join together to fight back against the male-dominated system that has taken advantage of them. The film premiered at Toronto but hasn't generated a lot of buzz, which surprises me a little bit because it looks like a faithful adaptation.

Foxfire opens in France on January 2nd, but has yet to secure a U.S. release date. Check out the trailer below.. [Indiewire]
