Cancel the apocalypse! Awesome first trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pacific Rim'
So what's going to be the largest scale film of 2013? Will it be Zack Snyder's rather epic Man of Steel? Or Guillermo Del Toro's long-awaited monster flick, Pacific Rim? Either way, Warner Bros. will be happy, and fans likely will be, too. The first film from Del Toro since 2007's Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim has had a mountain of expectations heaped upon it thanks to the director's keen visual eye and the promise of gigantic robots fighting even larger creatures. Over the last few weeks we've seen numerous viral promos, but they were nothing compared to just how awesome the trailer has turned out to be.
Del Toro's eye for grandeur is evident right from the very beginning, and he crams as many monsters and the twin-piloted "Jaegers" as he can in a brief two minute clip. Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, and Charlie Day lead a human resistance who mount up to battle the incoming monster threat, with Elba delivering the stand out line as he declares the apocalypse cancelled. It's a totally Samuel L. Jackson-esque moment, and it sounds a bit off with Elba's accent peaking through. But that's just a minor quibble, and frankly this looks like it may be scene-stealer of next summer. The special effects are still a bit rough around the edges, so we can assume a polish will be done before it opens on July 11th.
