Dane DeHaan is Harry Osborn in 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

It's been a breakout 2012 for Dane DeHaan, the type that long careers are built on. He pretty much touched upon every genre you can think of this year, going from superheroes in Chronicle to a period epic like Lawless, and even turning up for a small role in the indie drama Jack and Diane. A couple of weeks ago his name emerged as part of a shortlist of contenders to play Harry Osborne in the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, and now today Marc Webb has announced DeHaan as the guy for the job.

DeHaan beat out names like Alden Ehrenreich, Sam Claflin, and Eddie Redmayne for the job, and his hiring means that Sony has finally decided on what approach to take with the character. There had been some talk of going more outgoing and athletic, but clearly they've settled on sticking with an edgier interpretation.

Harry is Peter Parker's friend and the son of Norman Osborn, who we all know as the Green Goblin. If the trilogy's storyline really is to kill off Gwen Stacy at some point, the Goblin would likely play a major part in that, but would it be Harry or his father under the mask? I'm not convinced Webb is going to hold steadfast to the comic book storyline, like many seem to think. I guess we'll find out more if/when a Norman Osborn gets cast.

DeHaan joins the returning Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, along with newcomers Shailene Woodley and Jamie Foxx. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2nd 2014.
