Even though Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland wasn't the most warmly received film of his career, it made well over $1B at the box office. That shuts up a lot of critics and makes shareholders extremely happy. It also guarantees a sequel, and frankly I'm surprised Disney waited this long.
Variety reports that Linda Woolverton, who wrote the first film and has penned The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and the upcoming Maleficent with Angelina Jolie, has been brought back for the sequel. Details are unknown except for the obvious, that it will be based on Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass.
There's nothing on who else might be coming back. One would have to expect Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp are either contractually bound or close to it. But what about Burton? He's been struggling of late, so would Disney perhaps take a shot at someone else?
