Disney talking 'Wreck-It Ralph 2'; director promises Mario will be in it
If we were to put the success of Wreck-It Ralph in video game fighting terms, then Disney just scored a perfect hyper combo finish at the box office. Already a shade over $200M has been banked, and with plenty of markets to hit overseas, there's still a long way to go before it's "Game Over". So it's no surprise that talk of a sequel has already begun, and one of the film's stars sounds extremely confident one will happen.
Moviehole had a chance to talk to Sarah Silverman, John C. Reilly, and director Rich Moore, and when asked about possible follow-ups, the comedienne said there "will be a sequel". Reilly followed that up with a more thorough, but no less assured response...
Reilly: Some of the big muckety-muckets at the studio, who I just saw the other night, were like ‘We’re talking sequel!’”. The movie made $150 million dollars in eleven days, it broke the box-office record for Disney animated movies on opening weekend. If that’s any indication that we’ll be doing a sequel… I bet we’ll be doing a sequel.”
At the Comic-Con panel, Moore gave the impression that the reason why Super Mario wasn't in the film alongside his video game nemesis, Bowser, was that they couldn't get clearance from Nintendo. But apparently that wasn't the case, as Moore says he definitely will use the iconic Italian plumber in the sequel....
Moore: “We’ll really come up with something good for Mario to do [in the next film]. “To be able to present him in the sequel, would be great”.
He says that was the only reason Mario wasn't there was because they couldn't find anything for him to do. Moore says he plans on directing the sequel once it gets the go-ahead, which he expects to be soon. I liked Wreck-It Ralph quite a bit, although I wasn't blown away by it. There's a ton of potential in future films, though, with a nearly endless supply of cool characters and worlds that can be tapped into.
