Go to school with a pair of new 'Monsters University' images
Pixar are a bunch of clever old devils. We knew that already, but they may be doing something really smart with Monsters University, a prequel to their hit comedy, Monsters, Inc. The film takes the beloved duo of Mike(Billy Crystal) and Sully(John Goodman) back to their college days and shows how they became friends, despite hanging in totally different social circles. Monsters have their cliques, too.
It will have been twelve years between films by the time this hits theaters, with Pixar rightly surmising that many of their fans have grown up and are either in college or just out of it. So this could be a follow-up that speaks more directly to them. It's not all that different than what they did with the Toy Story movies, where their human owner grew up over time right along with us, leading to its logical, bittersweet conclusion. Smooth move, Pixar. I doubt they're aiming for that same sort of pathos with these movies, but it's a nice way of recognizing the audience.
EW has released a pair of new photos from Monsters University, including one that hints at the Revenge of the Nerds-style hijinks Crystal promised. Look for it to open next year on June 21st.
