J.J. Abrams is in the business of giving directors their first big break, just as when he tapped Matt Reeves to direct Cloverfield four years. That film was produced on a smallish budget and turned out to be a monster(pun intended) hit, and now Abrams is looking to replicate that success with his top secret sci-fi project, God Particle.
Variety reports that newcomer Julius Onah has been chosen to direct the film, marking only his second feature film after The Girl Is In Trouble, which debuted earlier this year. Details on God Particle are being kept quiet, no shocker for an Abrams film, but it reportedly "follows an American space station crew left abandoned after a problem with a Hadron accelerator causes Earth to vanish entirely." Oren Uziel, best known for Mortal Kombat: Legacy, wrote the screenplay.
This sounds a little bit like Event Horizon, or maybe even Sunshine, which are my favorite sorts of space station sci-fi films. Paramount's Insurge label is producing alongside Bad Robot, and the budget is aimed at between $5M-$10M.
