Unsettling first trailer for Shane Carruth's 'Upstream Color'

"I have to apologize. I was born with a disfigurement where my head is made of the same material as the sun". One had to expect that Shane Carruth, the guy who gave us the baffling and brilliant sci-fi film Primer, would follow it up with something equally far out, and that appears to be exactly what he's done with Upstream Color. No rest for weary minds when it comes to Carruth flicks.

The first trailer has been released as part of the hype for its appearance at Sundance, and it's all but impossible to tell what's going on. Enigmatic and downright creepy with random shots of violence and some alien spore-like creatures, the film apparently follows a  man and woman who are drawn together, "entangled in the lifecycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives."  Glad that was cleared up for us.

Add this to the slate of films I'll be scrambling to see in Park City. Upstream Color is hitting theaters earlier than expected, landing on March 22nd 2013.
