Johnny Depp to produce and maybe star in magician film 'Mortimer Wintergreen'

With Pirates of the Caribbean 5 well on its way, probably in a couple of years, there's little doubt that Johnny Depp will be back for another madcap adventure as Jack Sparrow. Depp doesn't limit himself to his signature franchise when it comes to playing such whimsical characters, and he may be about to add another one to his lengthy list.

Depp is set to produce and possibly star in Mortimer Wintergreen, an adaptation of the family-friendly novel by Myron Levoy. Jack Thorne(Skins) will pen the script, with Susanna White(Nanny McPhee Returns) in line to direct the story of a brother and sister who run away from their mean family and encounter the titular magician, embarking on a number of adventures with him and his magic hat. Warner Bros. has apparently been developing this for awhile, and had previously been working on a version that saw Wintergreen as a con man who finds the hat and goes on the run from those who want to use it for evil. It's unclear if Thorne's version follows that same path.

We see Depp's name attached to a lot of things, so we'll see if this one pans out. Right now we know he'll be working with Wally Pfister on his intriguing directorial debut, Transcendence.[THR]
